The Bonus Turnover Clause: How a “Free” Credit Can Lock a Binary-Options Account
A welcome bonus can convert a withdrawal request into a large trading-volume obligation.
A platform credits a welcome bonus and later cites a 30x or 40x turnover rule when the customer tries to withdraw. The review should establish whether the bonus was accepted, what version of the terms applied and whether the restriction was disclosed before trading.
Anatomy of the mechanism
Find the original bonus terms
Save the version from the date the credit was added, not only the current website terms.
Clarify the formula
Some clauses calculate turnover on deposit plus bonus; others on bonus only. The formula materially changes the obligation.
Separate bonus and deposited funds
Check whether the contract permits cancellation of the bonus while withdrawing deposited capital.
Document automatic bonus crediting
If the user did not opt in, preserve onboarding screens and account statements showing when the bonus appeared.
Watch moving thresholds
If required turnover changes after partial completion, request the contractual calculation in writing.
Legal and regulatory analysis
Applicable framework
The FCA permanently prohibited the sale, marketing and distribution of binary options to UK retail consumers from April 2019. ESMA previously imposed EU-wide temporary product-intervention measures; current EU treatment should be checked with the relevant national regulator rather than described as one permanent EU-wide rule.
What the rule does not mean
A product restriction or unauthorised provider can be important evidence, but it does not automatically determine a card or bank outcome. Payment-network and banking processes have their own conditions.
Practical compliance point
Execution allegations should be tied to the exact underlying, expiry timestamp, price source and contract terms. A losing trade alone is not evidence of price manipulation.
Evidence that matters
Build a chronological file another person can follow without relying on memory. Preserve originals where possible.
- Bonus acceptance record
- Original terms
- Turnover calculation
- Deposit/withdrawal history
- Support messages
Practical next steps
- Request the calculation in writing.
- Preserve the original terms.
- Verify local product restrictions.
- Avoid trading solely to chase a moving target.
What not to do
- Do not accept another bonus to reset the account.
- Do not assume a 40x clause is enforceable everywhere.
- Do not misstate an authorised payment as unauthorised.
